Kunstenaar Colen Campbell

"The Scottish architect and artist Colen Campbell was born in 1676 and was a descendant of the Campbells of Cawdor Castle.Initially he trained as a lawyer and then studied architecture, but it is for the architectural plans he published that he is best known today. His major published work, Vitruvius Britannicus, orThe British Architect, was issued in three volumes between 1715 and 1725. This was the first architectural work to originate in England for over a hundred years and was basically a catalogue containing engravings of English buildings by Sir Christopher Wren, Inigo Jones and other prominent architects of the time, including Campbell himself. Buildings were shown in plan, section and elevation, and the success of the books was instrumental in popularising neo-Palladian architecture in Britain in the 18th century.Colen Campbell’s main architectural commissions included the remodelling of Burlington House in London in 1717, the construction of Pembroke House in Whitehall for the 9th Earl of Pembroke in 1723, the construction of Houghton Hall in Norfolk in 1722 for Sir Robert Walpole, the Whig Prime Minister, and Mereworth Castle in Kent, again begun in 1722.Campbell died in 1729."
