Kunstenaar Madeleine Lemaire

"Madeleine Jeanne Lemaire was born in Ares in 1845 and is noted particularly as an artist of floral paintings.She was a student of Mme Herbelein, then of Chaplin, and first exhibited at the Salon in 1864. Amongst the many honours she received for her work were membership of the Societe Nationale des Beaux-Arts in 1890, a silver medal at the Exposition Universelle in 1900 and the granting of the Legion of Honour in 1906. She also illustrated ‘les Plaisirs et les Jours’ by Marcel Proust.Her work is now held in museums around the world, but particularly in her native France. She died in Paris in 1928."
