Artist Dylan

"Born in 1975, artist Jack Dylan grew up in South Dakota. The allure of colour and shape began to develop at an early age as Jack learned to translate their wonder onto paper in drawings. At the age of 17, the artist reached a defining moment of his creative progression on a trip to Spain. After visiting the Picasso Museum in Barcelona, he was stirred with the discovery of how “expression takes on so many faces”. Shortly after, Dylan attended university in Minneapolis, where he studied and obtained his degree in painting and drawing. Dylan looks to several innovators in the modern art world for inspiration. Artists such as Pollack, Diebenkorn, Rauschenberg and Rothko have all played significant roles in shaping Jack’s artistic evolution. Combined elements such as Pollack’s constant movement of paint on canvas and Rothko’s composition of monochromatic colour field environments are often resident in Dylan’s creations. He also expresses deep admiration for Pablo Picasso, who was fluent in all forms of media while still communicating such emotion. Dylan’s smart and contemporary style is best described as an investigative process of shapes within colour. Spontaneous yet thoughtful line work enhances rich colours, adds depth and draws a distinction to viewers. The transfer from light to dark mingled with fluid curves provides an introspective visual tour of the colourful corners of the mind. Beyond the sometimes turbulent and tangled surface, Dylan’s poignant hues and free forms are achieved by the understanding of a sense of balance. There is an underlying spirit of candour and confidence in the current of each brushstroke that runs across the canvas. Dylan feels that it is important to allow a personal presence to exist in each work of art that he creates. Jack shares the freethinking outlook of the “Beat” generation of the 50s and 60s. He has developed a reverence for the freedom, travelling, and need to experience that overcame the weight of materialism in that time period. In many ways, Dylan patterns his own life on these same beliefs. Jack is steadfast in his desire to travel and see as much of the world as possible and recount all of its brilliance in his work. Dylan sums up his personal aspirations by saying: “I want to move forward with a rapid, natural and constant fluidity to bring about evolution on all planes – in painting, art making, and life.” …"
