Artist Sutton

"Helen Sutton was born in Northern California but her family began to travel from the time she was very young. The artist’s formative years were, therefore, spent in England, New Zealand, and the San Francisco Bay area, where her family would eventually settle. Her attraction to the arts began at a very early age with much encouragement from her family. She later pursued an education in the arts by attending San Jose State University, where she obtained her degree in graphic design. She then began a career in advertising, primarily focusing on book design and illustration. In addition, she continued her schooling in art and the Italian language with studies abroad in Florence. Sutton also toured France, Russia, and Israel, soaking in the artistic influences of European and Middle-Eastern art. Helen Sutton’s creative influences vary greatly and range from graphic designers, architects, photographers, and illustrators to the Impressionists and other classic painters of art history. She looks to the Impressionists for their treatment of light, to the artists of the high Renaissance for their command of the human form and to contemporary animators for their humour, inventiveness, and whimsy. The artist’s style is one of true expression. The flowing curves and gentle lines in Helen Sutton’s paintings evoke nothing less than delicacy and romance. Hushed palettes, composed imagery, and brushstrokes filled with grace envelop the surface with an unwritten narrative of life and love."
