Artist A.F. de Prades

"Little is known about the life of artist Antonio F de Prades. He flourished from 1844 until 1886 and was probably the brother of the painters Alfred P. and Frank de Prades. Alfred de Prades specialised in painting sporting and military subjects, who sometimes collaborated with E J Niemann (1813-1876). He is also known to have painted Spanish and Russian subjects, although his full-length portraits of Lord and Lady Cardigan, which may be seen at Deene Park, Northamptonshire, are his most well known works. He worked mainly for private patrons, although exhibited a few works at the British Institution, the Royal Society of British Artists and at the Royal Academy. Antonio de Prades was an excellent painter of sporting subjects. His collection includes several depictions of the Derby and its winners, and includes The Derby Stakes at Epsom and Leamington."
