Artist Santiago

"“Originality is what separates great artists from the rest,” explains artist Santiago. “Seeking originality and staying original is what compels me.” This drive toward individuality and excellence began at an early age for the artist he recalls opening an encyclopedia to read about art history and discovering that he was captivated by the paintings of Leonardo da Vinci and the master works of Michelangelo. He knew then and there that he wanted to spend his life as an artist. Born and raised in California, in 1993, true to his childhood vow to become an artist, Santiago entered college to study Life Drawing and Art History, before transferring and majoring in Illustration and Storyboard Art. During his courses he cultivated master techniques in egg tempera painting and ancient methods of laying in gold leaf before graduating in 1998 with a Bachelors of Fine Art. During his extensive classical training, Santiago was drawn to the works of artists Jean-Leon Gerome and Lucian Freud who, in the artist’s opinion, are among the greatest painters in history. When Santiago is not in search of original ideas and captivating visuals, he enjoys spending time with his wife and daughter and draws his inspiration and strength from their presence. He also loves to play golf and tries to work in a game nearly every weekend. “I enjoy competing when challenged,” Santiago states with enthusiasm. “Golf has given me that opportunity.” Perhaps the game is a metaphor for his personal philosophy of life when he says: “You get what you put into it and there is no substitute for hard work. I want my art to show this.”"
