Artist Johann Zoffany

"Johann Zoffany was born in Germany in 1733 but settled in England around 1760. Zoffany joined the group around the actor David Garrick and made his name in England with paintings representing theatrical scenes, frequently showing Garrick himself. Zoffany also painted conversation pieces and he was quickly taken up by George III and Queen Charlotte, perhaps because of his German background, for whom he painted many works. A number of important Zoffany paintings are now held in the Royal Collection. The market for Zoffany’s conversation pieces slumped at the end of the 1770s and he then spent six years in India painting Indian princes and expatriate Britons, which brought him a considerable income. Zoffany returned to England in 1789 and died in 1810."
