Artist Petrus van Schendel

"Petrus Van Schendel was a painter of everyday and historic scenes, specialising in depicting markets and the various effects of light. In particular, he built a reputation as portraitist and as a painter of evocative nocturnal and candlelit scenes. Van Schendel was born near Breda, in Belgium, in 1806, and studied under Van Breen. He was a prolific artist and painted most of his works in Holland, particularly in Amsterdam and Rotterdam, but returned to Belgium to end his career. His works are now on display in galleries across Europe. Petrus van Schendel died in Brussels in 1870."
