Artist Simon Mendez

"Simon Mendez was born in York on the 5th August 1975 and has loved to draw for as long as he can remember. His father, an illustrator and designer, was always a great inspiration to him and father and son would often work together on drawings while Simon was a child. Until the age of 16, Simon Mendez almost exclusively used pencil to create monochromatic drawings. Always particularly keen on detail, he took a General Art & Design course at York Technical College, specialising in illustration in his second year. He then studied Scientific and Natural History Illustration at Fylde College, Blackpool, where he was able to combine his love of nature and drawing. It was at Blackpool that he was encouraged to submit samples of his work to the Association of Illustrators, where he won the Information & Technology category. He now paints many different subjects but mainly concentrates his efforts on portraits and animal subjects. He enjoys many different kinds of art but mostly from contemporary artists. His favourites are wildlife and fantasy art, but he also appreciates some expressive and modern art which is completely different to his own work. Simon Mendez spends his time away from the easel reading biographies, watching movies and walking in the countryside his hobbies include photography and most sports, especially golf, tennis and football. But his main hobby is painting: ""I'm just incredibly lucky that my hobby is also my job."""
